Dems need to redeem selves: DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION!

The following is an oped submitted to me by Dan DeWalt. DeWalt is a Newfane, VT selectboard member and the driving force behind Vermont's successful impeachment movement. He wanted me to send it along to all of you at Kos and I hope you all find it helpful.

Take care,

History Doesn't Impeach, it's up to Congress
One of the more ridiculous utterances coming from the mouths of Democrats who refuse to defend the Constitution and hold the Bush administration accountable is that "History will impeach George Bush" so they don't have to. Vermont's Peter Welch has trotted out this "argument", but if he would take a moment to read some history, he would understand that he has it exactly backwards.

More below the fold.

Vermont Senate passes impeachment resolution 16 to 9: House soon to follow!

Big news from the Green Mountain State.

The Vermont Guardian reports:

The Vermont Senate this morning approved by a 16-9 margin a resolution calling on the U.S. House to launch impeachment proceedings of Pres. George W. Bush and Vice Pres. Dick Cheney.

The Vermont Senate is the first state legislative body in the country to call on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings. Impeachment resolutions are currently active in Hawaii, Missouri, New Jersey, and Washington. A measure in New Mexico was quashed earlier this year.

The move comes just days after nearly 150 people from around Vermont converged on Montpelier to urge lawmakers to pass such a resolution out of the House and Senate. The emotionally-charged, 40-minute meeting left backers hopeful that something could happen this session.

Today's resolution was introduced by Senate Pres. Pro Tem Peter Shumlin, D-Windham, and Sen. Jeannette White, D-Windham. The process began last night when Senate Majority Leader Dick McCormick, D-Windsor, introduced a resolution. However, his resolution did not include Cheney. The resolution by Shumlin and White did include Cheney.

The vote took place early in the morning and was over in less than a half hour.

The Senate version now goes to Washington and if the Vermont House passes theirs by the end of the session, expect this to send an even stronger message and send ripples throughout the country and beyond.

As ABC Sports Al Michaels once said, "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?.

Vermonters do.

Dispelling the myths on impeachment: An interview with John Nichols

Best-selling author and The Nation Washington correspondent John Nichols visited Brattleboro last week to talk on the necessity to investigate President George W. Bush and remove him from office. His new book is The Genius of Impeachment: The Founder' Cure for Royalism and the book provides a hidden history of an American institution: the peoples' right to impeach our elected leaders. The Genius of Impeachment reveals how impeachment movements played a fundemental role American history and Nichols' book credits Vermont in his last chapter - "What then From Newfane?"- for lighting the fuse that sparked a nation-wide impeachment movement. John Nichols has been on a nationwide book tour and wanted to end it in the heart of the impeachment movement, Windham County. I caught up with Nichols after the event to talk more about the latest developments, misconceptions about impeachment, and the role Vermont plays.

David Swanson and the Case for Impeachment: A MyDD Diary Special

So I've seen some interesting discussion re: to impeach or not to impeach on MyDD. Great.

The last two days I had the chance to speak with David Swanson, Co-founder of Democrats.com and Creator of After Downing Street.org.

Yesterday, Swanson and many others spoke before hundreds of people at an impeachment rally in Philadelphia that drew the likes of Cindy Sheehan, Tim Carpenter of the Progressive Democrats of America, Code PINK and Veterans for Peace folks and a number of reputable liberal/progressive bloggers.

Please take some time to read the interview I had with him. I know there are a lot of apprehensions for pursuing impeachment but my hope is that this will clear up the misconceptions "some" people may have. Some of this material will appear later this week in another publication I write for.

Be well and enjoy the interview. Looking forward to the discussion.

More thoughts on Busby loss: Why we need a Progressive Media Echo Chamber

What can the Democrats do to ever break out of their cycle of losing?

My answer is the media. Where is our progressive echo chamber to combat all the misinformation of the right? I really think this is a primary factor why Kerry lost in '04 (see Swiftboating).

PLEASE take the time to read this article by investigative journalist Robert Parry. He's one of my favorites and I'd really like to hear what people have to say about his perspective. His take on the need for a progressive media infrastructure is in my mind, the most important factor that's keeping the Dems from winning.

I'm looking forward to the discussion.

At the end of the special Vermont State Democratic Party meeting today there was a lot of cheering and applause - relief that the almost 3-hour meeting was finally at an end, relief that we'd gotten through it with no screaming or name-calling, and relief that we had made a decision that maybe nobody absolutely hated. (maybe?)
